The facilities of R&D in Germany

In Wolfratshausen, Germany, the R&D department has access to 25 test rigs in total which are operated with diverse media – gas, water, oil, media mixtures, and sometimes also original media. In addition to testing new seals on our test rigs, we also test materials and material combinations and perform customer acceptance tests. The results of the tested products can be examined in our internal laboratories and measuring rooms.

Calculation

Our calculation group contributes significantly to the work of research and development at EagleBurgmann. When designing and developing seals and materials, the calculation engineers supply results e.g. from the areas of seal design, structural mechanics, thermal and flow dynamics, etc. This is done particularly through simulations on the basis of FE (Finite Elements) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) calculations as well as diverse special programs. They work closely together with Engineering and Testing. The department provides comprehensive calculations and expert knowledge for gas- and liquid-lubricated mechanical seals, magnetic couplings and seal supply systems, does temperature calculations (ATEX) and calculations according to customer specification.

Test rigs

On our test rigs we simulate different conditions and test all types of dynamic seals. Our list includes test rigs for:

  • High speed (rotational speed up to 45,000 min-1)
  • High pressure (vacuum up to 1,000 bar (14,504 psi))
  • Compressor seals
  • Agitator seals (inter alia ATEX certification)
  • Long-term test facilities
  • Magnetic couplings
  • API 682 acceptance test rigs

Laboratories and measuring rooms

Tested materials and seals are examined in our laboratories and measuring rooms, e.g. for signs of wear and changes after test runs. We use our own scanning electron microscope to examine wear and analyze material compositions.

Software

The group “Software” optimizes commercial software packages for specific sealing applications, to efficiently solve calculation tasks. In special cases, own codes are written.
