Fluoropolymer components in sealing solutions from EagleBurgmann

The European Union intends to restrict the production, supply and use of PFAS substances (per- and polyfluorinated chemicals). Further up-to-date information can be found under the following links: https://echa.europa.eu/de/-/next-steps-for-pfas-restriction-proposal and Programm update

Sectional view of an industrial mechanical seal with transparent fluoropolymer components, illustrating the use of PFAS-based materials in EagleBurgmann sealing solutions as well as the company’s commitment to innovation and compliance.

EagleBurgmann manufactures sealing systems that may contain elastomer and plastic components. Fluoropolymers (e.g. FKM, FFKM, PTFE) are often used for these systems due to the increased requirements for chemical and thermal resistance. For many technically demanding applications, there are currently no equivalent substitute materials.

EagleBurgmann supports the objectives of the European Green Deal and the Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability to protect human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals. With over 10,000 different PFAS compounds, we also support a responsible, differentiated, and fact-based approach to this class of substances. A general restriction on PFAS would have serious consequences for the future availability of seals containing fluoropolymer components.

EagleBurgmann is working intensively on this critical issue. We are also in contact with various industry partners and industry associations.

Of course, we would like to be able to continue to serve the requirements of our customers in the future with suitable sealing solutions with materials that meet legal requirements and a responsible approach to our environment. We have already started to investigate and evaluate possible alternative materials. Our material suppliers have an important role to play in this process.

The use of fluoropolymer components is still permitted and EagleBurgmann supplies up-to-date sealing solutions based on the current order conditions. If there are already suitable sealing alternatives for certain applications and our customers would like to use them, we will be happy to advise them accordingly. Applications for which there are currently no suitable alternatives can only be investigated once the final restriction rules are in place.

In addition to the ongoing EU restriction proposal, we are closely monitoring current developments and will coordinate with our customers as soon as new regulations come into force.

Study shows importance of fluorpolymers for demanding sealing applications

In a study, the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials (IWM) has examined areas of application and possible alternatives of fluoropolymers. The study was initiated by EagleBurgmann and four other Freudenberg Group companies to obtain an independent expert opinion on this topic. Specific applications from the five Freudenberg companies show where and why PFAS materials are indispensable. At EagleBurgmann, for example, this includes gas-lubricated compressor mechanical seals for high pressures and/or very low temperatures.

The Fraunhofer IWM study is entitled "Replacement of Polymeric PFAS in Industrial Applications with Harsh Environments" and is available for download here.
