So that the sustainable water supply functions reliably

Desalinating seawater or process water is becoming ever more important today, for drinking water is in short supply due to climate change. At the same time, global water consumption is rising – and with it, the number of water desalination plants.

The most efficient and state-of-the-art method for desalination is reverse osmosis (RO) a membrane separation procedure. Thermal distillation is a process that is primarily used for drinking water production in the Middle East. Here, seawater is heated, evaporated, and then liquefied again.

These processes require the use of many different pumps. They must move a great quantity of water and be able to handle different requirements. The sometimes high salt content of seawater or of the separated salt (brine), the chemicals in the brine, and high pressures of up to 60 bar place great demands on the pumps and their seals. At the same time, the sealing components used for drinking water production must comply with high hygienic standards and legal requirements. The technically oriented design of the seals and their materials are therefore critical for reliable, efficient, and safe pump and system operation.
