From old to new

Smart Turner Pumps Inc. from Brantford in Ontario, Canada discovered how quickly a pump can be retrofitted to a cartridge seal from EagleBurgmann. The company received an order from the city of Toronto to overhaul two wastewater pumps.

"Smart Turner manufactured these pumps back in 1928, the very year that American pilot Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly over the Atlantic Ocean. 86 years after the pumps were installed, we received them for inspection. After a thorough examination, we thought it would be more cost-effective to overhaul the pumps rather than deliver new ones," remembers David Lounsbury, owner of Smart Turner Pumps.

The pump manufacturer has been working with EagleBurgmann for some time now. It was therefore logical to order a mechanical seal from EagleBurgmann as a replacement for the original compression packings. One Cartex single seal each with a special cover was exactly right for retrofitting the shaft seals of the pump. After a few modifications and a short delivery time, they were quickly installed in the stuffing box space. The low radial height of the seal proved to be particularly advantageous for the small installation space. The cover and shaft sleeve are preassembled on these single seals and have been subjected to a static pressure test prior to delivery, which makes installation considerably easier and ensures safe operation.

Since the wastewater is loaded with solids such as sand and pulp, EagleBurgmann's engineers recommended selecting a silicon carbide mechanical seal and stationary seat. This material provides the necessary hardness to protect the seal from wear and ensure reliability under various operating conditions. Especially when the public property needs to be protected from flooding in the event of heavy rain and snow melt, the pumps are subject to intensive demands.

Due to the high age of the pump and the documentation lost over the years, for example about the current pressure in the stuffing box space, the Cartex seal with its high operating limits has proven to be the right choice.

Cartex seals help to reduce the costs for the next operating cycle of the wastewater pumps. Acquisition costs and service life are in reasonable proportion to each other. With regard to the seals of EagleBurgmann, the city of Toronto will be able to leave the two wastewater pumps to their own devices for a long time.
